Bridgestone Winter Driving School

Mike at Bridgestones Winter Driving School

I just got back from an amazing adventure. Bridgestone invited my son Travis and me to attend their award winning winter driving school. The Bridgestone Winter Driving School is located outside Steamboat Springs Colorado. With Steamboat’s 6,900 feet elevation, the school is the perfect location to develop or perfect your winter driving skills.

The Bridgestone Winter Driving School was founded in 1983, and is the only driving school of its kind in North America. Law enforcement officers from across the country, including Secret Service and FBI, have attended the school. Periodically, professional racing drivers use the school to increase their skill level.

Bridgestone’s 77 acre facility includes three separate ice and snow tracks. The tracks are coated with more than 250,000 gallons of water to create a variety of off icy off-camber and create elevation challenges.  To provide an additional margin of safety, course developers have arranged snow banks bordering the course. Open from December through March, the school is available for drivers 16 years old and up that holds a valid driving permit. The school is a perfect extension of Bridgestone’s Teens Drive Smart Campaign.

The school features front, all-wheel, and full-time all-wheel drive sedans and SUVs from Lexus. All vehicles are equipped with Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires.

This is am amazing school with professional instructors from all types of racing. The skills and knowledge you take away from this course will improve your driving significantly. This applies to winter or summer driving.

Students learn the meaning of the terms: Understeer, Oversteer, Weight Transfer, Skid Control, and more. Not only do you learn this in a classroom setting, you put these skills to use on the track.

For a teen, or new driver, attending this school could change the way they approach being behind the wheel for the rest of their lives. As far as veteran drivers go, the “can’t teach an old dog new tricks” saying does not apply. Just adding one new skill could change your life, or another drivers life, when it comes to split second decisions on the road.

I highly encourage everyone to purchase the schools award-winning DVD titled “Modern Winter Driving Techniques” from their website.
