Mike the Car Guy – April 13th, 2013

Mike_caricature_thumb (1)Why So Expensive?

I have a 2005 Mercedes C320 that needs brakes. My shop tells me that the brake rotors cannot be resurfaced and must be replaced. I hope it is not true because it costs big bucks. Please say is ain’t so. Thanks Billy.

Mike: Billy, Welcome to the world of German car brakes. Yes, it is best to replace the rotors because they are soft and wear out as fast as the pads. Of course, they work so well that most owners consider it one of the costs of having a world class car. Almost all European cars are expensive to repair, that is why some shops shy away from them.

Engine Light On:

Linda writes: Hi Mike, I have an engine light showing on my Ford Windstar. My nephew works at an auto parts store and has a device that can read the computer codes. He said the problem was the ECT sensor. Trying to save money, my husband bought the part and replaced it. Then, the light came on again. What do we check for next? It is okay to drive?

Mike: Linda, without any training, using this code reader is going to cost you more than taking it to the dealer. The code reader is telling you that there is a problem in the data sent to the computer by the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Often, the sensor is telling you that the engine is not warming up fast enough for optimum emissions. This can be caused by several components in the cooling system. Perhaps the thermostat is staying open? Perhaps the cooling fans running too long? A trained technician needs to look at the data stream determine what is going on. Driving the vehicle with this problem could damage your catalytic converters and cost you big money. Get it looked at asap.

Failed Emissions Test My 48k mile, 2010 CRV failed state inspection because of an emissions problem. Do I have to take it to the dealer for repair? Are they more expensive? Thanks for the help Don.

Mike: Don, you’d be crazy to take it anywhere ELSE but the dealer because they most likely will fix it for free. The federally mandated warranty for most emissions components is 8 years / 80,000 miles. –MH

Here is a tip:

Have your service tech visually check your drive belts (or belt in most cases) every other oil change. I don’t know any shop that charges to check, and it is really important. A broken belt can disable the engines water pump, alternator, and power steering. Please get it checked for the summer season. -MH

Mike the Car Guy – 03/12/2013

Mike_caricature_thumb (1)Is it time to sell it? I am a big fan of your column, and since I have a problem with my 155k 2004 Pilot, I had to ask for your opinion. I neglected to service my transmission and now I need a $2500 overhaul. I love the vehicle, but my Dad says that it isn’t worth spending money on because it has over 100k miles. My trade in value is terrible because it won’t shift, so I’ll have to almost give it away. Is the engine going to go because it has over 100k miles? With maintenance, how long should it last? Thanks! Janie

Mike: Properly maintained, your engine should easily go 250k miles before it gets tired. Of course there will be Belts, water pump, seals, and gaskets to replace during that time so don’t think it will be maintenance free. I would first have the shop check it over before making a decision. If they can’t foresee any big issues, I’d fix it in a heartbeat and stay without a car payment. Maintaining your vehicle and driving the wheels off of it is always the best way to save money.

Torn Seat Problem

The leather on my 2005 Landcruiser drivers seat is torn in two spots. Is there somewhere I can get it repaired here in Conroe? Thanks Krystal

Mike: Either go online or ask your dealer for a recommendation on an automotive trim shop in you area. Seats can be easily and economically repaired if you can find the right place. Trim repair is something most dealers farm out for repair, so they should be able to send you to a good trim shop. It shouldn’t be too expensive, and, be good as new.

My weekly car tip is: Be kind to your transmission. Whenever you are just pulling in to a parking space, be sure to come to a complete stop before you put your auto transmission into Park. The transmissions parking mechanism can be damaged by asking it to stop a moving vehicle. On the same theme, be sure to come to a complete stop before you shift gears or put the car into “Drive” or “Reverse” after backing up. You know what I mean, you are backing up out of a parking spot and you just slip it into drive without coming to a complete stop. It is really tough on the transmission and repairs can get into the thousands. You know who you are! The transmission you save can be your own.

Mike the Car Guy – 02/27/13

Mike_caricature_thumb (1)Stalling Chevy? I have a 125k mile, 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 truck that dies sometimes when I turn right. It only happens three times a week, and it starts right back up, but the problem is driving me crazy. Otherwise, it runs great. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks, Dennis.

Mike: Dennis, I would recommend cleaning your vehicle’s throttle body. It sounds like the throttle plate has become dirty and starving the engine for air when it snaps closed and sticks. I would recommend getting a BG induction cleaning. This way, the entire intake and fuel injection system will be clean. With that amount of mileage, it is surely going to help tremendously. You will be amazed what clean injectors will do to drivability.

Alternator Problems, Help! I have a 2004 Saturn with a charging problem. I replaced the alternator in December, and had to replace once since then. (Luckily, I bought a rebuilt one with a lifetime warranty.) The failures were only costing me time and convenience until it quit charging and I had to be towed in. ($120 Ouch!) Now, the low cost auto parts store alternator has gotten expensive. Worse yet, the charge light is flickering again. What should I do? Thanks for the advice, Tom.

Mike: Tom, it sounds like you have learned your lesson about those rebuilt “lifetime” alternators. I shy away from anything with a “lifetime” warranty for the exact reason you just experienced. Go and ask for a refund on that unit and then buy a remanufactured Delco alternator, and move on. The parts store won’t make as much money, and you will pay a little more, but you won’t be stranded either. The reason they give a lifetime warranty is because of the obscenely high failure rate. Always buy OE parts when it comes to electrical, tune up, or brake parts.

Here is a tip: When buying parts, shy away from buying “rebuilt” and ask for a “remanufactured” unit. A remanufactured part is one that is as close to being brand new that you can get. Remanufactured parts are completely brought back to original specifications with all of the wear items replaced with new. This is the best way to avoid doing the job a second time. Quality repair shops will only use reman parts. So should you.

Mike the Car Guy – Valentines Week!

Mike_caricature_thumb (1)Checking Alternator

Dano writes; Years ago, I was told that a way to test your charging system was to remove one battery cable while the vehicle is running. If it dies, the alternator is bad. Is this way of checking still ok?

Mike: Dano, that method of testing was never ok. Before the electronic age, this may have worked, but now, doing this may cost you several thousand dollars in damage. The reason is, that without the battery connected, the alternator will produce a damaging voltage spike, toasting the electronics. (including light bulbs!) In the pre electronic days this may have worked, but not since the late 60’s.

Do They Really Need This Information?

Thom writes; I went to the dealer the other day for parts. They asked for my VIN number, saying it is necessary to get the correct parts. I am wary of giving information out. Were they on the level?

Mike: Thom, when a car company finds a common part failure, they design an upgrade and implement those changes immediately in the production line. That is much better than waiting until the next model year to put in the fix. That means that the dealer needs to know where your truck fits in the production run to ensure you get the exact part you need. I had a truck the other day that had an upgraded alternator bracket and mounting bolts that solved a big problem. That is the good thing about the “new” US auto industry. They handle the problems instead of ignoring them.

Longevity Tips

I want to keep my 2011Nissan Maxima for at least 200k miles. What is the best way to do that? Would it hurt to skip an oil change if I am driving only highway miles?

Mike: To keep a vehicle for over 200k miles isn’t rocket science. Follow the maintenance recommendations in your owner’s manual and never put off necessary repairs, use original equipment parts, and use synthetic lubricants when you can. Finally, if you think you’re saving money by skipping an oil change, you aren’t. Missing even one oil change can cause engine wear and cause damage. Change oil every 5-7k miles and use good oil.

Here is a tip: Car problems can pop up at any time. It helps to get in the habit of opening the hood and looking, listening, and smelling what’s happening in your engine bay. (without the engine running) Look for fraying or cracks in belts, and cracks or bulges in hoses. Investing in a service manual for your vehicle will help show you what to look for and help you with minor fixes. Besides, if you are broken down, having a manual may help someone else fix your vehicle

Mike the Car Guy – February 5, 2013

Mike_caricature_thumb (1)Warm Up Or Not?

Billy writes, how long should you warm up the engine on our cars nowadays before driving? Back in the 40′s, when we had a cold winter (South Texas), we let the engine warm up a little bit before we backed out of the driveway. I think all we do now is, crank it, check all the gauges and put it in gear and go. Even if the temperature is below freezing.  Is this correct?

Mike: Billy, every automotive engineer I ask that question, tells me that it should be ok to start up and go. They always say, “should be”, and that worries me a little. They quote advances in oils and engine materials for eliminating the need for warm up. Personally, I try to wait 20 seconds or so every morning and 40 seconds on a cold morning. I know it wastes an ounce or two of fuel, but it takes me that long to wake up and take a sip of coffee anyway. So I figure, what the heck.

What Kind of Filter?

Karen writes: I just bought a used 2006 Honda and I have a question. The owners manual says to replace the cabin filter at 60k miles. What the heck is a cabin filter and where is it?

Mike: Great question, since the use of cabin filters is relatively new. Your cabin filter is essentially a filter for your HVAC system, similar to the filter your home AC system uses. It is usually located under the dash, near the glovebox. Cabin filters go a long way toward keeping odors out of your interior. Change it every year or two and it will keep your Honda smelling better. It also helps allergy sufferers by controlling the allergen level in the car.

Bill writes: I have a 2004 Dodge Ram with a Cummings Diesel. I accidentally added gasoline to the tank and now it barely runs and sounds terrible. I towed it home- what should I do next?

Mike: Bill, trying to run a diesel on gasoline can damage your engine and cost you a ton of money. Do not run the engine until you have the fuel tank drained, the fuel lines purged, and the fuel filters replaced. Once all those things are done, it should start up. After you get it going, I’d recommend an oil change for good measure.

Here is a tip: If you are like me and you plan to drive your vehicle until the wheels fall off, you need to perform your scheduled maintenance. Look in your owners manual for the “severe service” recommendations. Our area easily qualifies for severe service and doing what is recommended will go a long way toward extending your vehicles useable life. Also, understand that this maintenance schedule is the minimum recommended to keep a vehicle up. Doing more than the minimum will always help your vehicle last longer.

Mike The Car Guy – Christmas Week

Is it a money thing?

Mason writes: I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 99K miles. I have been told that I need the timing belt replaced at this mileage. My dealer suggested I replace the water pump and the oil seals that the same time. It’s not a lot of extra money, but are they just trying to get to me? I plan to keep it for four more years.

Mike: Mason: Your dealer is doing you a favor and saving you money in the long run. Since the engine timing belt runs the water pump, if the old water pump fails, (it will) or when the seals begin to leak, the entire timing belt job has to be re-done, at your expense. The dealers intention is to replace all of the usual wear items associated with the timing belt while they are working in that area to save labor costs. If you do what they recommend, you shouldn’t have to worry about anything on that side of the engine for another 90K miles. Always ask for Genuine Honda parts.

Locked Out: Dennis writes: I just bought a 2009 Tahoe and found that I do not have the “key” to remove the wheel locks. This means we can’t remove the lug nuts to rotate the tires. I am afraid it will be expensive to cut them off. What should I do?

Mike: Don’t worry. Stop by your dealer or tire shop and have them remove the locking lug nuts off with their universal removal tool. Then, buy another set of locking nuts with a new removal key, or just buy regular lug nuts. This is a common problem so don’t feel like you are the first to do this. At least you didn’t find out on the side of the road with a flat tire.

A sincere thank you.   I would like to thank you for taking time to read my column. I sincerely hope that I have imparted some of my hard earned knowledge to you and helped you solve a car problem. Knowledge is power, but only if you use it. Mike

Battery losing power

Laura writes: I have a 2008 Corolla with 66k miles and a strange starting problem. If I drive it every day, everything is fine. If I let it sit for the weekend, Monday morning, the battery has gone dead and it won’t start. I have replaced the battery twice and it hasn’t helped the problem. What can I do without spending a lot?

Mike: Laura, your problem is not the battery, it is a voltage draw. In other words, something electrical is staying on when it isn’t supposed to, and draining the battery. Your service guy will use a volt meter to isolate the culprit and fix it. If you are doing it yourself, you must set up the meter and recognize the voltage drain and then begin removing fuses from the fusebox until the drain stops. Then isolate the problem from there. Being an electronics wiz helps at times like this.

From Mike: This time of year, there a lot of accidents involving deer. It may be hunting season, but you are not supposed to use your car or truck. If you live near a wooded area, or drive near wooded areas, keep in mind that daybreak and sunset are the prime time for deer collisions. If you ride a motorcycle you need to be even more cautious. If you find an animal in your path, hit the brakes and DO NOT swerve to miss them. More accidents are caused by losing control than hitting an animal.

Here is a holiday shopping tip:

Please be safe when shopping this year. Park in a well lighted area and make sure your car is locked and all valuables (GPS, electronics, and purchases) are completely out of sight! When returning to your vehicle, have your car keys in your hand and be aware of your surroundings. So many people are so involved in talking on their cell phones that they are unaware of things around them. Walk with friends or family whenever you can. By all means, if you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to ask for a security escort.  There are a lot of bad guys out there so PLEASE be aware and be safe! Mike

Expedition Front Wheels Turn Black

Victoria writes, every week my car’s front wheels turn black. My husband says that it is normal and to ignore it. That isn’t good enough for me. I have questions: What is it? Does ignoring it cause any damage to the wheels? How can I keep it clean? Can I make it not happen in the first place? Thanks for your help. I read your column every week!

Mike: I get this question often, and there is no easy answer. The black brake dust on your front wheels is the byproduct of your brake pads wearing against the brake rotor. As the organic pad material heats up, it burns, turns black, and sticks to the wheels. It is slightly corrosive, so it should be removed every few weeks. I use Eagle 1 wheel cleaner and then I use their sealer that makes the black dust wash away easily. Finally, there are new brake pads on the market that give off a clear type of dust that is hardly noticeable. On your next brake job, you might ask for them.

Window Stuck

Karl writes: I have a 2003 Yukon that the drivers window won’t roll up or down. My service guy says that my window regulator mechanism has failed. The parts are pricey, so is it a good idea to get one at a junk yard?

Mike: Kevin, since the driver’s window is used about four times more than any other, a used part isn’t the best way to go. On old ones, the plastic parts are brittle and break just like yours. I would go ahead and bite the bullet and get a new one that will work when you need it. Besides that, there is only a 30 day warranty on used parts and the labor isn’t covered by warranty.

Here is a holiday shopping tip: When going to the mall or shopping area, park in a well lighted area and make sure your car is locked and all valuables (GPS, electronics, and purchases) are completely out of sight! When returning to your vehicle, have your car keys in your hand and be aware of your surroundings. Walk with friends or family whenever you can. Camry Engine Sludge

Charlie writes, I have a 2001 Camry with a V6 that has 98k miles. I have been told the engine has become sludged up. Short of an overhaul, is there anything I can do to fix this before I have to buy an engine?

Mike: Charlie: Yes, BG products makes an engine cleaner that will slowly dissolve the deposits and get your engine clean. I like the BG solution because it cleans gradually, without making the problem worse. Go to www.bgfindashop.com to find a dealer near you that can do this. Also, check with your dealer for any service campaigns that may cover this. I remember this as being a Toyota issue at one point.

Corolla Computer Problems

Daniel writes, I have a 2006 Corolla with 69k miles. Over the weekend, it died at a light and now it won’t start. My shop says that the car’s main computer has failed. It is going to cost me a bundle. Is there any way to fix this cheaper?

Mike: Great news Daniel! Your computer is covered by Toyota’s 8 year or 80K mile emissions warranty, so the repair will be FREE!  You vehicle could also be covered by a recall for that exact failure. Call your dealer and they will handle it asap.

Cracked Radiator

Randy writes, I have a 2003 Honda Civic with 141k miles. My radiator has a crack in the plastic on the top by the hose inlet. I have fixed it with epoxy, but why did it crack?

Mike: Randy: First of all, your fix will not hold, it will just crack somewhere else. The integrity of the plastic tanks has been compromised, most likely from not changing the coolant. That is why I preach the virtues of changing your coolant every year or doing a flush every 2 years. Replace that radiator before it fails and possibly destroys your engine.

Here is a tip: Before you go out and buy that used car, have it checked out by someone you trust. Just because there is a clean Carfax, that doesn’t mean that there hasn’t had any bodywork, it just means that the insurance company didn’t pay for it and then report it to Carfax. There are a lot of bad cars at the auction and there is always a used car dealer willing to take a chance and turn it for a profit. If you find a vehicle and the seller won’t let you take it for a checkout, or won’t take it for you, then walk away. If you are buying it from a new car dealer, you are better insulated against loss. However you still need to do your homework. Certified Used Cars are the safest solution for getting a good vehicle.

Headlight Lenses Fogged

Richard writes, I have a 2004 Honda Civic that has those fogged up plastic headlight lenses you talk about. Is there any way to repair that short of replacing them?

Mike: Richard, There are several places that claim they can polish them clear again, but I haven’t seen any that work well. I would look on EBay or Amazon.com for aftermarket replacements. They are reasonably priced and will last for years. It is the best way to go.

Did I kill Our Toureg?

Kim writes, Not remembering it was a diesel, I added gasoline to my Husband’s VW Toureg TDI fuel tank. It immediately started sounding terrible and It doesn’t run now. I had it towed home. What do I do to get it going before he comes back in town from a business trip? My sons and I are trying to fix it ourselves to save money.

Mike: Kim, the fuel tank must be drained, and the filters replaced. You can siphon most of the fuel from the tank, however, disposal may be a problem. You can probably get your local repair shop to dispose of it properly for you for a small fee. After draining the tank, replace the fuel filter and the water separator filter. This isn’t rocket science, but you need to go to your parts store or dealer and get some instruction on how it’s done. Be sure to use Bosch or VW replacement filters to insure quality. Good luck!

Alternator Woes

Walter writes, I have a 2004 Tahoe with a V8 and 101k miles. I replaced the alternator 3 months ago with one from the parts house. I have had three of them fail since then, for no reason. They are lifetime warranted, but I keep getting stranded and being stuck with a wrecker fee. What should I do?

Mike: Walter: This is a common problem with “lifetime warranted” parts. Replace the alternator with a remanufactured one from AC Delco and your problems will be over. They give them warranties like that to keep you from complaining when you have to keep replacing them. If you always use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts, you will be way ahead for only a few dollars more.

Here is a tip: Be sure to clean the debris from your windshield cowling every chance you get. This time of year, leaves and pine needles collect there and fall into your vent system. Odor causing bacteria will grow in your evaporator case and cause terrible smells as soon as it warms up. Just a tip!

Enders not ready to end her championship dreams

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 23) – The pressure to win the 2012 Pro Stock championship continues to mount, as two races remain before NHRA crowns its champions in four professional categories.

But KLR Group driver and top contender Erica Enders won’t let the pressure get to her in this weekend’s Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, even as she tries to chase down points leader Allen Johnson.

“I say the same thing all the time: I don’t take any one race more importantly than any other race,” Enders said. “Having said that, there are only two races and eight rounds of eliminations left, with six needed to catch A.J. It’s a crucial time, and something that I’m excited and optimistic about.”

Johnson is 83 points ahead of Jason Line and 125 ahead of Enders, who has had her best season as a professional this year by winning four times.

“It’s something I think about every day,” Enders said of the title race. “I can’t change the outcome. All we can do is our best and hopefully, it’ll work on our side.”

Las Vegas is one of the favorite trips for NHRA competitors, given the glitz and glamour of Vegas. But Enders will be all about business this week.

“I’m going in on Wednesday, and I’ve got the press conference and autograph session on Thursday,” Enders said. “We qualify on Friday. I’m extremely serious about what’s going on, and there’s definitely no room for error on anyone’s part.

“I’ll go there business-minded and have fun after the fact. We’ll hopefully celebrate a win on Sunday night.”

Enders’ four victories have come in the last 11 races since her historic first win on July 1 in Chicago. She became the first woman to win in the ultra-competitive Pro Stock class that day, but she’s proven to be one of the top drivers in the sport since then.

In addition to the four wins, Enders has two No 1 qualifiers, two track records and three final-round appearances this season.

Her GK Motorsports team has stepped up its game, and that development continued during the two-week break since the sport’s most recent race, at Reading, Pa.

“Just because we had two weeks off from national events doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot of hard work going on at the shop and in the background,” Enders said. “Engine development stuff is always in the works, and the dyno is always running.”

ESPN2 will broadcast the eliminations show starting at 7 PM Houston time Sunday.

A Jeep SUV Sweep at the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) Truck Rodeo and a Texas “Three-peat” for Jeep Grand Cherokee

SAN ANTONIO , Oct 22, 2012 – For the third consecutive year, Jeep Grand Cherokee – already the
most awarded SUV in history – has captured the “SUV of Texas” award at the Texas Auto Writers
Association’s (TAWA) annual Truck Rodeo.
In addition, after voting by 50 opinion-leading journalists, Jeep brand vehicles won every category in
which they were entered during the annual two-day test of the industry’s newest SUV and truck
lineups, over a variety of on-road and rugged off-road terrain at the Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch,
Texas, near San Antonio.
The rugged 2013 Jeep Wrangler was named “Mid-size SUV of Texas” for the third year in a row. The
2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee was named both “SUV of Texas” and “Full-Size SUV of Texas,” and
the ultra-premium 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit retained its “Full-Size Luxury SUV of
Texas” title.
“We are absolutely delighted that Jeep has won the prestigious ‘SUV of Texas’ award three straight
years,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Even more
impressive is the fact that Jeep vehicles came out on top in every category we entered. We are
grateful that the influential Texas auto writers have once again recognized the unmatched
combination of benchmark capability and outstanding everyday driving dynamics that Jeep vehicles
offer.

“Texas is a tremendously important SUV market and we have proven that winning TAWA awards
increases showroom traffic and increases sales,” Manley added. “Through September of this year,
Jeep brand sales are up 20 percent nationally, and nearly double that in Texas.”

TAWA members were given two days of on- and off-road evaluation time with Jeep and competitive
vehicles. Consideration was given to everything from exterior styling and off-road capability, to the
vehicles’ overall utility, value and fuel efficiency.

“Texans are passionate about their SUVs. Our members were clearly impressed with the 2013 Jeep
Grand Cherokee once again,” said Michael Herzing, TAWA President. “Grand Cherokee’s awards
at the Rodeo speak volumes about its design, capability, and performance. Texas is Jeep country.”

Automotive News

DETROIT — Chevrolet plans to end production of the 2013 Corvette in February and idle the sport car’s assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky., for six months as it retools for the highly anticipated all-new model.

Production of the redesigned 2014 Corvette is scheduled to begin in August or September next year, General Motors said today.

GM said it has told Chevy dealers the factory will stop accepting guaranteed specific orders for the 2013 Corvette at the end of October. Dealers can continue to submit orders for the 2013 Corvette, the last of the sixth-generation of the car, until the end of December. But GM won’t guarantee that a specific combination of trim level and options will be built.

The redesigned 2014 Corvette is expected to be slightly shorter and significantly lighter than the current car, with an upgraded, more comfortable interior.

Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter notes that only two parts are being carried over from the 2013 Corvette to the new car: the cabin air filter and the rear latch for the removable roof panel.

“With the new Corvette, we set out to build a world-challenging sports car with design, refinement, efficiency and driver engagement that is second to none,” Juechter said in a statement.

The new Corvette will make its public debut Jan. 13, on the eve of press preview days for the Detroit auto show.

To generate advance interest, Chevrolet today released an image of the sports car’s redesigned Crossed Flags emblem. The new emblem is “much more modern, more technical and more detailed than before, underscoring the comprehensive redesign of the entire car,” GM design chief Ed Welburn said in the statement.

A key component of the new Corvette, known as the C7 for seventh-generation car, is a new engine that will mark the fifth generation of GM’s small-block V8. The new engine was designed for the Corvette but will also be used in GM’s redesigned full-sized pickups and SUVs, which will also debut at the Detroit show.

Details on the new small-block V8 are set to be released on Oct. 24.

The history of the Crossed Flags emblems begins with the original Corvette concept car that was unveiled at the GM Motorama show at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City on Jan. 17, 1953.

The original emblem used racing’s checkered flag crossed with the American flag. Because the American flag couldn’t be used on a commercial property, the emblem was changed to Chevrolet bowtie and the fleur-de-lis for the production Corvette, which started rolling off a temporary assembly line in Flint, Mich., in late June 1953.

Mike the Car Guy – October 20th, 2012

Who Do I Trust?

Sonja writes: I took my 2007 Honda SUV into a place the other day for a wheel shake and to check the tires. They told me that my front end was terribly worn and needed $1450 in work PLUS $800 for tires! Luckily, I couldn’t leave it for the repairs, so I went home worried. A friend told me to read your In Wheel Time website and contact you. After talking to you on the radio, I went to a BG shop you recommended. Their guys looked at it and it only needed $350 in repairs, and I don’t need tires for another two months. I wish everyone could learn from my experience. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Mike: Sonja, I am glad to help. Many times a customer visits a new place and the service guy starts looking for worn parts to replace while overlooking the original complaint from the customer. There is a big difference between worn and worn out. The first place wanted to put your Pilot back in NEW condition when you only wanted to fix the shake and have a safe vehicle. This kind of problem can be avoided by establishing a relationship with a good Service Center you can trust. They don’t have to try to make it “like new” because they know you will be back in later to keep it up.

Mark writes: I have a 2005 BMW with an automatic transmission. There is a small leak at one of the seals. My question is: where the heck is the dipstick to check the fluid? No where in the manual does it mention checking the fluid level. What gives?

Mike: Mark, Unfortunately, BMW is one of the growing number of companies that believes that certain transmissions don’t require maintenance. (what a crock) Because of this, they do not have a dipstick to check the fluid. There is a special bolt you remove to check the level, but it is not easy to get to. It would be best to find a dealer or transmission shop and have them check it for you. If they have to add fluid it takes a funny fluid injector setup. I think that this is another case of engineers being too smart for their own good. –Sorry.

Here is a tip: If you are as frugal (cheap) as I am, you will drive a distance to save 10 cents on a gallon of gasoline. Knowing that, if your tire pressures are low, it can cost you 10% on fuel economy. Ok, gas is $3.40 so, lets do the math. Low tires can cost you 34 cents a gallon! What will you do to save 34 cents a gallon? How about checking your tire pressures?
